Welcome to the weekly newsletter, where I share my musings on world events. I’ll also use this to identify those deserving of our collective side-eye. I’ll share thought-provoking online gems or things that make me laugh (because we need both). And sometimes, I may include personal nonsense. I hope this brightens your week and makes you think.
Nonsense
Musician’s Corner
Taylor Swift released her much-anticipated album, The Tortured Poets Department. Two hours later, she announced it was a surprise double album and released a second version. Fans have decided the album is more about her relationship with Matty Healy than Joe Alwyn, and also has a couple of songs about her relationship with Travis Kelce.
I am a Taylor Swift fan. That being said, I’m kind of ambivalent about this album. It’s not “bad” by any stretch, but I’m having a hard time connecting with much of the material. To be transparent, she’s experienced a lot more in her life than I have in mine, especially when it comes to romantic relationships (much to my chagrin).
The album is interesting lyrically (there are a couple of questionable lines; that “1830’s” line??) and has some catchy melodies (some that throw back to pre-Midnights Taylor). It almost feels like some of the songs were recorded for previous albums but didn’t make the cut, although the songs clearly reference Joe, Matty, Travis, and some scattered miscellaneous topics (Kim Kardashian, etc.).
Despite the album perhaps not being her best cohesive work, I don’t think that was the point. I think this album’s purpose was to purge her heartbreak and grief. By that measure, I think she achieved her goal.
Here are my favorites from TTPD, in the order they appear:
“So Long, London” - love the intro, which reminds me of church bells
“Florida!!!” (with Florence + the Machine) - I admit that I hate that the location featured is Florida, which has passed so much harmful legislation
“Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” - imagine 40,000 little girls singing along with this one at each tour stop
“I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” - “I’m so depressed, I act like it’s my birthday everyday … I cry a lot, but I am so productive”
“The Prophesy” - love the chorus, in particular

The WNBA draft occurred. Caitlin Clark went first, of course. Congrats to all of the draftees.
Organs of deceased Alabama inmates were removed without familial consent. Atrocious.
Red Lobster considers filing for bankruptcy. Too much endless shrimp? Better get your Cheddar Bay biscuits while you can!
The U.S. vetoed a UN resolution for Palestine membership. Sigh.
Pregnant women have been turned away from emergency rooms since Roe was overturned. We knew this would happen.
Columbia University students were arrested and faced suspension for involvent in a peaceful campus protest in solidarity with Gaza. The reprecussions faced by the protestors are ridiculous.
